On September 17th, Subliminal Projects was alive with an enthusiastic crowd as the gallery inaugurated their fall program with an exhibit entitled 3 Kings. Featuring the legendary Fab 5 Freddy, Lee Quinones and Futura 2000, 3 Kings showcases contemporary work along with classic pieces by the graffiti artists. From writing in the subway tunnels of New York City to being praised in the critically acclaimed Art in the Streets exhibition at MOCA, the three artists have been at the top of their game for thirty years. Curator Patti Astor brings them together again to further highlight their individuality and demonstrate why the graffiti luminaries are crowned "King".
Known as Hip-Hop's ambassador to the world, Fab 5 Freddy presented his signature old-style lettering set against images of subway cars. Generally thought of as the greatest graffiti artist of all time, Lee Quinones revealed sophisticated works that touched on classic pop iconography such as Frankenstein's monster and Uncle Sam. Futura 2000, who was instrumental in bringing graffiti to Europe, displayed bold abstract pieces that possess a sense of modernity.
Above all, gallery guests joined these longtime friends and artists (with the DJ stylings of Shepard Fairey) to celebrate the most influential cultural explosion of the last thirty years.
