Sneak Peek: Jeremy Nichols "Outside/In" @ Compound Gallery
This Thursday, Compound gallery will present "Outside/In", a solo exhibit featuring new work by Portland-based artist Jeremy Nichols. Taking inspiration from his multi-ethnic background, Nichols portrays a look into the struggle of being torn between residing in Japan and upstate New York as a child. The artist's work is a representation of his attempt to make sense of finding his place within these opposing cultures. The internal conflict of being unable to fully adapt to only one location is ever so present in his complex and clustered compositions. Nichols' recent graphite series invites viewers "to take a position from the outside, challenging their own understanding of contemporary society." The chaotic harmony through "repetitive elements of architectural design and familiar patterns" makes reference to his feelings of isolation. "Outside/In" serves as the artist's drive to amplify the relationship between landscapes and human condition. If you happen to be in the Portland area, don't miss out on this show. Until then, take a look at a few preview images courtesy of the artist.
